Our graduate PhD program was officially established in 1994 and its scope is to train new students in all modern areas of Chemical Engineering and related disciplines that can support the research activities of the department.
Enrolled PhD students have the opportunity to work in a unique and stimulating academic and research environment, and perform world-class research work in a Department with international reputation in areas such as
- Atmospheric pollution and climate change
- Transport phenomena
- Catalysis, electrochemistry, surface science
- Plasma technology and nanotechnology
- Materials science and technology
- Process control, process design, process optimization
- Biocatalysts, Biotechnology, biomolecular engineering, environment
- Theory and mathematical modeling
- Simulation of materials and complex fluids
Most of the PhD students receive financial support in the form of a scholarship or a fellowship through their participation in competitive national and international research projects. These scholarships last from 3 up to 5 years and, in addition to helping PhD students cover the cost of their living plus reasonable expenses during their studies at UPatras, cover their travel and participation fees in national and international conferences, workshop and meetings in order to present their own research work and achievements. PhD students also contribute to the teaching activities of the Department.
At the beginning of their studies, enrolled PhD students are required to attend a set of advanced (core) courses to help them develop a foundation of technical knowledge in Chemical Engineering. This knowledge is obtained in a way that the student develops an understanding of basic principles, while at the same time providing depth in a specific area. Students can also attend elective courses offered every second or third year in our Department, as well as courses outside the Department to help them develop additional expertise in the fundamentals of specific disciplines.
A unique aspect of our PhD graduate program is the low graduate students - faculty ratio in the Department, approximately 3 to 1, which permits close interaction between students and faculty – a critical component of the graduate experience in our Department. Graduate students also profit a lot from interactions with other researchers both from academia and industry in Greece and Abroad through their heavy involvement in national, international and industrial research projects. Our current graduate student population consists of about 75 full-time students. Our graduates consistently obtain employment in outstanding academic and industrial institutions.
